If you live in an apartment or house with limited space, then you know you’ve got to be strategic with your decor and furniture. You have to pay attention to what you buy and where you place it, otherwise, your space will start looking cramped or cluttered.

If you have little room to work with, you’ve probably thought that plants just aren’t in the picture — after all, isn’t your space better used for something functional? But the great thing is that you don’t need too much space to accommodate a pot or two of these small plants for sale. With them, you can add some greenery to your home environment.

Arrowhead Syngonium

The Arrowhead Syngonium is a tropical plant hailing from the rainforests in Central and South America. Its name comes from the spade-like shape of its foliage. It is a fast-growing plant that starts to vine when matured and constantly produces vibrant new green leaves with white veins.

While it can grow up to 15 inches long, trimming and pruning it to keep its original compact size is easy. Simply cut off all climbing stems that develop and your Arrowhead Syngonium will remain small yet bushy.

Cactus

Cactus

One of the most popular low-maintenance tabletop plants is Cacti — these prickly plants will be a great addition to your home, and will be quite easy to care for. As their natural habitat is the desert, they grow best with warm temperatures, low humidity, good drainage, and lots of light.

However, if your cacti start to turn dull or yellow, then this means they are getting too much light and too little water. Adjust by placing them in indirect light, and water well when their soil is completely dry.

Dwarf Croton San Francisco

With its colorful leaves of speckled red, orange, yellow, green, and violet, the Dwarf Croton San Francisco is a small yet eye-catching pot of nature you’ll want to have for your home.

They need bright but indirect sunlight and their vibrant color depends on it. Keep them in well-draining soil and pot, and water them thoroughly about once a week. If you feel your Dwarf Croton is growing too tall or wide, overgrown leaves or branches can be trimmed just above a node or leaf set.

Ficus Nana

Ficus Nana

Also known as Ficus Microcarpa, the Ficus Nana is a small and easy-to-grow plant often recommended for beginner gardeners. It grows well in just about any environment but will do best in spaces with lots of indirect sunlight, cool temperatures, and adequate water and humidity.

We recommend putting your Ficus Nana away from gusts of wind and drafts, as their leaves may fall off. This plant doesn’t like being moved too often, so avoid that as well. A light prune once or twice a year is enough to keep it tight and compact.

Ficus Triangularis

Another Ficus plant, the Ficus Triangularis, is a great plant to grow indoors and is not a fussy one. Its name comes from its attractive, triangle-shaped leaves, which are green and dappled with white.

These plants grow best in well-draining soil, bright and indirect light, and slightly cooler temperatures. It can grow up to 4 feet, but they tend to stay smaller than that and can be easily trimmed back. If you’re an ambitious gardener, you can try to shape your Ficus Triangularis as a bonsai tree.

Golden Pothos

Golden Pothos

Golden Pothos is known for its yellow-green heart-shaped leaves, which grow to trail up to 10 feet long. Its trailing and climbing growing habit makes it an attractive hanging plant for your home. Plus, they are particularly fitted to be indoor plants as they are capable of cleaning the air of gaseous toxins.

They thrive in bright and indirect sunlight, but do fine in medium to low indirect light as well — just avoid intense sunlight as it burns their leaves. Water this plant every week, and wait for its soil to completely dry out before watering again. If you want to control the length of this plant, trim each vine and cut at least ¼ inch above each leaf.

Marian Dieffenbachia

The Marian Dieffenbachia is a tropical indoor plant that will look great in the corner or table of any room. This houseplant can give your space a lush, tropical feel. It grows best in lots of indirect light, and soil that is not overly moist — hold off on watering this plant until the top 2 inches of its soil are completely dry.

It can tolerate lower light conditions and a few missed waterings but watch out for drooping leaves or extremely slow growth. This is a sign that your plant needs to be given extra TLC. It grows upwards, and if it grows too tall for your taste, you can use pruners to cut it back.

Peperomia Obtusifolia

The Peperomia Obtusifolia — nicknamed the Baby Rubber Plant — is a succulent-like variety of Peperomia. It has thick stems with glossy spoon-like leaves, which grow plump after watering. This plant will stay quite small (under 2 feet tall) and will have a compact form.

Peperomia Obtusifolia prefers to stay in medium indirect light, as they are not suited for intense sunlight — their leaves are prone to browning and burning if left out in the sun. Water this plant every 1 to 2 weeks, and always check if their soil is dry before watering. Expect to water this plant more often if kept in warmer, brighter environments.

Fittonia

Fittonia

Also known as the “nerve plant”, the Fittonia is another perfect addition to your miniature space. Like most of the selections on this list, the Fittonia is relatively easy to care for, without any sensitive requirements for lighting, humidity, and, soil, and watering.

Different varieties of Fittonia exist, but the two most striking ones are the Red and Green Fittonias. The Reds are known for their intricately-designed veins adorning the lush and velvety-red leaves. The Green counterparts on the other hand, feature dark green leaves with a contrasting white pattern.

To care for your own Fittonia pot, make sure that it is placed under indirect sunlight. You can control the vibrance of its hues by likewise increasing or limiting sun exposure — low lighting will typically give the leaves a faded appearance. This plant will benefit well from frequent misting — at least once every 24 hours. When indoors, make sure to keep it at a distance from direct sources of airflow, such as air-conditioning units or directly underneath electric fans, to prevent dehumidification and dryness of the leaves.

Zebra Cactus

Also known as Haworthia Attenuata, the Zebra Cactus plant is an interesting-looking, small, slow-growing succulent plant with white wart-like stripes over its thick leaves. This creates a stripy look that resembles a Zebra’s stripes (hence the name).

These plants don’t need much care or attention and are reasonably adaptable. They grow equally well in various lighting but avoid direct sunlight or complete shade. It does best with watering at least once every two weeks, possibly once a week in warmer temperatures. Place in spaces with good ventilation as they need some airflow to grow well.
